Where
is Eco Village located?
Eco Village is located in Richmond,
California. Richmond is a densely populated, ethnically
diverse city in the East Bay. It's probably best
known for its oil refinery that periodically sounds
toxic release warning sirens. Crime, gangs, and
drug abuse all plague this gritty, highly urbanized
community. Surrounded and isolated by freeways
and railroad tracks, it's difficult to find a
peaceful grren place to learn and relax.
Eco Village is changing that. We are locateed
at 21 Laurel Lane on 5.6 acres of uniquely preserved,
semi-rural farm land which is home to a wide variety
of native and non-native vegetation i.e, fruit
trees, Oaks, Beach, Banana, California Buckeyes,
Bay Laurels, Blackberries and Walnuts. Two wonderful
flowing creeks, San Pablo and Wilkie, flow through
the land and and support a wide range of aquatic
animal and plant life.

What
is the history of the Eco Village farm?
Eco Village was able to secure property as the
result of a lot of effort, goodwill and community
support; the previous owners really supported
the vision we shared with them about preserving
the beauty of the property and developing "Eco
Village" which would teach people valuable
skills in how to protect the environment and to
live in harmony with nature and each other. After
a tremendous effort I was also very fortunate
to obtain financial support from the Coastal Conservancy
and the Trust For Public Land. I selected the
earth Island Institute to serve as the project's
fiscal agency. I have always believed that once
you make a commitment to do good work, people
will help you and that has been the case with
Eco Village. Now that we are very busy seeking
operating funds, with the hope of securing multi-year
funding and developing an endowment fund.

What
needs does Eco Village address?
Eco Village services are designed
to help restore and protect the Earth's ecological
systems, which have suffered almost irreparable
damage during the past 50 years as a result of
unsustainable lifestyles sucha s high rates of
consumption, urban sprawl and waste. Teh air we
breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and
the land we live on all have been grossly polluted,
Richmond being a prime example. Sometimes problems
seem so big they are overwhelming; it's hard to
see how you can change things. The Eco Village
Farm Center's programs give children and young
adults a chance to change things at a micro-level...their
level. We can work individually to effect change
in our own lives, work together to change our
community, and eventuallybring about global change.
